Heart Engine

HEART ENGINE: Self-organisation and bioengineering of human heart development

In this collaboration, we aim to create and implement experimental models that accurately mimic the human heart with the potential to include patient-to-patient variations. We have found that functional human cardioids formed by controlled encapsulation of hPSCs in hollow microgels induce spontaneous self-organisation in cavitated structures that efficiently differentiate into cardiac lineages. Single cell transcriptomics and gene regulatory analysis will be used to generate computational models that enable us to predict key transcription factors and signalling pathways that are crucial for cardiac development and disease.
