Prof. Dr. D.W. Grijpma is appointed at the University of Twente in the Department of Biomaterials Science and Technology, and also affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University Medical Center Groningen of the University of Groningen.
RESEARCH
His research is aimed at the development of resorbable polymeric materials for application in tissue engineering and clinical use as medical implants such as resorbable hydrogels, drug releasing nano- and micro particles and scaffolds for tissue engineering.
His expertise lies in the development of functional polymeric materials, their structure-properties relationships and their processing into implantable structures. The preparation of functionalized macromers by ringopening polymerization of lactones and cyclic carbonates and subsequent functionalization to yield reactive end groups, allows the preparation of resorbable networks through rapid prototyping techniques such as stereolithography. Implants with a well defined geometry and biological functionality can readily be prepared in this manner.
