1. Volkspark
You probably know Volkspark from all the activities that are organised there, such as the annual fairs, the In Het Volkspark festival, activities during the Kick-In and more. But Volkspark is also the place to be for a relaxed summer day. Located just outside the city centre, it is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. Bring a blanket, some snacks and drinks, and enjoy the sun with friends.
2. Other parks in Enschede
Volkspark is not the only park in Enschede where you can enjoy the nice weather. Along Hengelosestraat, between the campus and the city centre, you'll find three beautiful parks. Close to the city centre is the G.J. van Heekpark, connected to the smaller Van Lochemsbleekpark. Here you can enjoy a walk, grab a drink at Schenkerij Wattez, or simply chill. Further along Hengelosestraat lies Abraham Ledeboerpark. This park holds the so-called Green Flag Award, making it one of the most beautiful parks in the world. Fun fact: in the Abraham Ledeboerpark you can find one of the thickest and largest giant sequoia trees in the Netherlands!
3. Van der Poel
Name a better way to cool off than with a delicious ice cream! You will find the best ice cream in Enschede at Van Der Poel. There are two Van der Poel locations in the city centre: one at the Stationsplein and one near the Grote Markt. If you get your ice cream at the Van der Poel at the Stationsplein, the nearby Willem Wilminkplein is the ideal place to enjoy it in the sun!
4. Rutbeek
Whether you're looking for action and adventure or want to relax by the water, Rutbeek is the perfect place to spend hot summer days. Okay, it takes a little longer to cycle there (about 25 minutes from the city centre), but it's definitely worth the effort. Here you can do water skiing, swimming, canoeing, standup paddleboarding, hiking, climbing in the climbing forest or just enjoy the sun at the beach. In special areas, you are even allowed to light the barbecue!
5. Hulsbeek
A bit further away, near Oldenzaal, you’ll find Hulsbeek, another recreational park with water, beach and forest. Just like at Rutbeek, you can indulge in sports activities such as cycling, hiking, beach volleyball and more. For a day of simply relaxing on the beach, this is the place to be as well.
6. Outdoor swimming pool UT
Need a break between lectures? A dip in the university's outdoor pool is perfect to cool off. Swim a few laps or just enjoy the sun and the atmosphere. All you need is a UnionCard (and, of course, your swimwear 😉).
7. Lonneker Mill
Just outside Enschede, in Lonneker, lies the Lonneker Mill. A nice bike ride will get you here within 15 minutes from the city centre. You can visit the mill (for free), relax in the sun or get something tasty from the mill shop. The flour for pannenkoeken (the Dutch version of pancakes) is highly recommended: it makes the most delicious pannenkoeken! From the Lonneker Mill you can also take beautiful walking and cycling tours.
8. Park in front of the DesignLab
Let's be honest, we're probably still going to be at the university a lot in the weeks leading up to the summer holidays. With full days of lectures and final deadlines, it's not always realistic to visit a park or Rutbeek. If you still want to relax during your break, the park in front of the DesignLab is a great spot. Bring your friends and your lunch, and with a bit of imagination, you'll feel like you're in Volkspark 😉.
9. Hof Espelo
If you need to cool down and relax, Hof Espelo estate in the north-west of Enschede is the ideal place. The walking routes are perfect for a relaxing and scenic walk in the shade. Here you can escape from your study stress and recharge your batteries.
10. Oude Markt
The ultimate place to spend summer afternoons and evenings is the Oude Markt. The Oude Markt is the bustling heart of Enschede, where regular activities and events such as Grolsch Summer Sounds, the Batavierenrace, and concerts take place. Sit down with friends on one of the many terraces, order a nice drink, and enjoy the sun!
