The word "robot" was coined in a theatre play. There's more that connects theater with the design of robots. Dr ir Edwin Dertien works as a robot theater maker and is a lecturer and researcher in Creative Technology and Interaction Technology (UT). He designed three robots for theater: Pix, Ravi, and now Lumi, to let the audience experience how "animation" works. Theater offers a unique hybrid reality where human emotions, programmable humans (actors), and expression are explored. Dertien highlights the historical and cultural parallels between robots and theater and how media influence our interaction with robots. The topic of discussion is Lumi, a living robot house measuring 2x2x5 meters: a study of the tension between "honest" AI and the compelling rules of theater, such as plot and narrative.
