Coded bias: a closer look at facial recognition

In the film Coded Bias an African MIT-researcher discovers that the computer doesn’t recognize her face correctly. Only if she puts on a white mask, the computer recognizes her. Coded Bias is a fascinating and disturbing documentary about facial recognition. How do gender and ethnic biases arise in these systems? How can this be avoided? After the film we have a discussion with prof. Raymond Veldhuis, a facial recognition expert at UT.

InScience is one of the largest science film festivals in Europa and unique in the Netherlands. The festival focuses on film, science and society. Now also in Enschede! Check out the complete program here.
