Born the 25th of December 1967 in Utrecht, The Netherlands, he received his PhD degree at the Univ. of Amsterdam in 1995. He is full professor at the department of physics of the University of Florence, Italy, and in charge of the micro and nano photonics research area at the European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy (LENS). His research interests lie in the fundamental optical properties of micro and nano photonic materials, in particular with periodic, random, or quasi-crystalline structure, and their applications in the field of lighting and solar energy. Recently he has started a new research line on nano photonic micro robotics within the context of an advanced research grant of the European Research Council.
