The Female Faculty Network Twente kindly invites you to the lecture:

Combining career and care in academia

by Dr. Claartje Vinkenburg

Associate Professor, VU Amsterdam

Monday February 10, 12.30-14.00 (including lunch)

In Vrijhof, room 3

In her talk, Claartje Vinkenburg will present recent conceptualizations, empirical findings, and recommendations for employers and employees on sustainability in combining career and care in academia. Based on earlier research on Women in Science & Technology (EU FP7, 2009), at TU Delft (2010), and most recently an ERC CSA support grant “Capturing gendered career paths of ERC grantees and applicants” (2012-2014) (Acronym: ERCAREER), Claartje argues that promoting sustainable excellence requires a reconsideration of conventional careers in science, of normative beliefs about the ideal scientist (and the ideal parent), and of exisiting "work-life" policies  for both women and men in academia. This reconsideration contributes to gender equality in science, focuses on "fixing the system" rather than "fixing the women", and addresses the "chilly climate" often experienced in physical sciences and engineering where many do not "dare to care".
