Dear FFNT-members,

The Female Faculty Network Twente kindly invites you for our lunch lecture with Cocky Booy on Thursday 12th October, 12.00 - 12.30 hrs. in building Logica.

Tackling Stereotypes

Maximising the potential of women in Science, Engineering & Technology (SET)

“Achieving equal and full participation of women in all scientific disciplines and at all levels will enhance diversity, and promote further progress and excellence in European science.” (European Commission. Women and Science. 2005)

In all European countries women are under-represented in technical studies and SET professions. In most European countries, the number of female graduates is proportionately higher than that of male graduates. However, the scientific labour market remains male-dominated and women are significantly under-represented in scientific and engineering disciplines. Statistics show that women have great difficulty finding employment in science and technology jobs, receive fewer promotions, lower salaries, and have less access to management positions and decision making bodies. Gender stereotypes act as barriers, through their negative impact on recruitment, retention and promotion of women in science and technology sectors and occupations.

In this lecture Cocky Booy will highlight some of those barriers and will give examples of good practice and positive interventions from around Europe with the aim of increasing the numbers of women in SET.

Cocky Booy is managing director of VHTO (=national expert organization on girls/women and science/technology). VHTO, a non profit organization, makes an effort – in many different ways – to increase the involvement of women and girls in science, technology and engineering.

Afterwards there will be a lunch from 12.30 till 13.30 hrs.

Could you please reply if you want to join this lecture (with or without lunch) by sending an e-mail to: FFNT@utwente.nl

I hope to see you on 12th October.

Kind regards on behalf of the Female Faculty Netwerk Twente (FFNT)
