The Female Faculty Network Twente invites you to a special workshop on:
“Power, Effectiveness and Gender”
by Professor Virginia Valian
on Thursday 25 March from 13.30 till 15.30 hrs.
in building the Drienerburght
This workshop covers the following topics: developing a circle of advisors, improving one's institution and field, increasing one's effectiveness in influencing decisions, and negotiation. The topics are interlinked. A circle of advisors – individuals who can provide information and advice on each area of an academic's life – is crucial for understanding how academia works, how to bring out needed change, how to succeed, and how to negotiate. An understanding of the role of gender in the different aspects of academic life will lead to better strategies for advancement of the self and advancement of women.
Virginia Valian is professor of psychology and linguistics at the Hunters College, US. She has carried out a huge number of gender equity projects, and lectured at numerous international universities, as e.g. at the MIT. She is the author of 'Why so Slow? The Advancement of Women', (MIT Press, 1998), in which she explores the reasons for professional disparities between men and women of equal academic and professional background. Important to mention is that Virginia Valian is well known in gender equity institutional policy. We are very happy to have her at the UT for a whole day! In the morning she gives a workshop to university leaders, in the afternoon there is the workshop for which you get the invitation here, and finally she will give a university broad talk at the end of the afternoon.
