BIOGRAPHY
Ben Witvliet was born in Biak, Netherlands New Guinea on 6 Dec. 1961. He received his BSc degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from the Hogeschool of Techniek en Gezondheidszorg in Enschede, The Netherlands in 1988. He worked in Israel as an electrical engineer, and for KPN in The Netherlands in international telecommunication network management. From 1993-1995 he was Chief Engineer of the shortwave broadcast station of Radio Netherlands in Madagascar, responsible for operation and maintenance of two 300 kW transmitters and 13 high gain curtain antenna systems supported by 130m high towers. Subsequently he worked as a technical manager of a team of TV, FM and AM broadcast engineers for Nozema in The Netherlands, and as a broadcast specialist for Radiocommunications Agency Netherlands, doing applied research projects, a.o. the design and realization of a helicopter measurement system for antenna diagram and EIRP measurement of FM broadcasting towers. He is currently technical advisor in the spectrum management department of the Radiocommunications Agency, participating in ECC spectrum management, ETSI standardization and ITU-R expert groups on radio wave propagation.
From 2011 to 2015 he performed part-time promotion research in the Signals and Systems group and Telecommunication Engineering group of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science (EEMCS) of the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands. He obtained his PhD in December 2015 for his research on “Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) – Interaction of Antenna and Propagation Mechanism”. In 2015 he obtained the prestigious Anton Veder award for his NVIS research. He currently combines his work at the Radiocommunications Agency with research at the University.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Current research topics are antenna measurement, ionospheric radio wave propagation, Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) antennas and propagation, radio noise measurement, and spectrum sharing.
