MHD Zaher Mahfouz was born in Damascus, Syria, in July 1987. In November 2011, he obtained his bachelor's degree in electronics and communications engineering from Damascus University. His FYP was a color-based object tracking system mounted on a track vehicle robot. After graduation he did a 3-month internship in RF section (RNO - GSM & GPRS) in Huawei Co. Ltd/ Syria branch.

He received his master's degree in electrical-electronics & telecommunications engineering from University Technology Malaysia (UTM) in February 2014. A couple of months later he joined UTM MIMOS center of excellence as an assistant research officer where he worked on designing a universal SDR-based testbed for CR-MANETs using USRP devices.

Since July 2015, he has been working as a PhD student in Telecommunication Engineering (TE) group at University of Twente. His research is under Slow Wireless project.
