Pervasive Systems Alumni Reunited to Honor the Legacy of Prof. Paul Havinga

On Friday, May 16, 2025, the Pervasive Systems Research Group at the University of Twente hosted a heartfelt alumni reunion and memorial event to honor the life and legacy of Prof. Dr. Ing. Paul Havinga, who passed away unexpectedly on May 3, 2024.

Prof. Havinga was the founder and long-time leader of the Pervasive Systems group, a visionary researcher, and a deeply valued mentor and colleague. His work laid the foundation for pioneering research in wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, and the broader field of pervasive computing. Beyond his academic achievements, Paul was known for his unwavering support, warm personality, and dedication to nurturing the PS community.

Held in the IDEATE Room of the DesignLab at the University of Twente, the event brought together alumni, current members, and colleagues from across the years. The afternoon began with a welcome by Dr. Özlem Durmaz Incel, Chair of the Pervasive Systems Research Group, and Prof. Boudewijn Haverkort, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS). A moment of silence was held in memory of Paul, followed by an informal carousel of speakers who shared personal reflections, stories, and tributes.

The gathering was a moving celebration of Paul’s impact—both professionally and personally. Many attendees contributed photos and anecdotes, which were displayed throughout the event as a collective tribute to his enduring presence in the lives and careers of those he mentored.

The afternoon concluded with a networking reception, where guests reconnected and reflected on shared experiences. In the evening, the reunion continued over dinner at Loev Bar Bistro in Enschede, fostering the sense of community that Paul so strongly encouraged throughout his career.

“This event was not only a memorial for Paul, but also a celebration of the strong and supportive community he helped build. We are grateful to everyone who joined us to honor his memory,” said Dr. Durmaz Incel.

The Pervasive Systems Research Group extends sincere thanks to all who attended and contributed to this special day.
