The Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS) cluster has officially been renamed to: Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, Numerics and Systems (MAGNUS). The name change was formally approved by the Discipline Council DAMUT in May 2025.
MAGNUS brings together four research chairs, each bringing in its unique expertise:
- MIA (Mathematics of Imaging & AI): Developing mathematical models and algorithms for imaging, inverse problems, and artificial intelligence.
- MACS (Mathematics of Computational Science): Specialising in numerical analysis, scientific computing, and the development of efficient algorithms for large-scale simulations.
- MAST (Mathematics of Systems Theory): Focusing on systems and control theory, with applications ranging from robotics to networked systems.
- 3MS (Mathematics of Multiscale Modelling and Simulation): Investigating multiscale phenomena in physics, biology, and engineering through mathematical modelling and simulation.
The new name, MAGNUS, reflects the cluster’s core research themes—analysis, geometry, numerics, and systems. The cluster’s research spans a wide range of applications, from medical imaging and AI to climate modelling, smart systems, and beyond.
