Programme CurioCities
- Summer School or city trip?
CurioCities offers the vibrant spirit of CuriousU, a Summer School that University of Twente organised in the past.
This year's CurioCities: Futures Unlocked* is a small-scale experience: compare it with a city trip that offers you and your fellow international students a fun and educational experience. With a strong focus on exploring futures for societal impact, University of Twente presents real cases and developments that involve the work, passion and points of view from academics, companies, civil society and government in the Twente region.
This answers my question.Thank you for your feedback - What type of students are welcome?
CurioCities is tailored towards bachelor's/undergraduate students at a university outside the Netherlands. Of course: Dutch students are welcome, too!
This answers my question.Thank you for your feedback - What is CurioCities: Futures Unlocked*?
When you as an international bachelor's student join CurioCities: Futures Unlocked*, you explore opportunities for a thriving circular society, while going on an experiential journey in Twente, The Netherlands.
- It's a city trip packed with activities that you will carry out together with students from all over the world.
- Local key actors in society will guide you through the process and share their work and passion when it comes to the societal challenge.
- From arrival to departure, you will apply methods and tools within the Responsible Futuring approach.
- What you will take home, is a suitcase filled with new competencies that you can apply as a responsible citizen and professional in your career. Futures Unlocked!
- Wondering that this asterisk* means? It's a touch of curiosity. Use your (collective) imagination ;)
- Next year, our subtitle Futures Unlocked will be replaces by a freshly new one. Who knows?
More information about the concept, the approach and referral to the programme: Go to the Futures Unlocked* page.
This answers my question.Thank you for your feedback - What does the programme look like?
The programme of this year's CurioCities: Futures Unlocked* consists of three phases:
* UC: Find common ground
* I HEAR U: Explore different points of view
* WE GROW: Desirable future citiesThroughout the experience, you will be guided by the UT community, professional guilds, a local company, regional students (university of applied sciences + research university AKA 'hbo' and 'wo'), and citizens. Everyone will participate in the final futures thinking workshop, where you work together on a specific challenge on circular society.
More information programme of CurioCities: Futures Unlocked*: go to the Programme activities page.
This answers my question.Thank you for your feedback - What is Responsible Futuring?
Overconsumption happens on a global scale: plastic waste, fast fashion, our addiction to digital technologies... you might have some examples, too. Choosing one solution could lead to other consequences: for ourselves and for our planet. That's why we need a collaborative approach and explore new paths.
- Throughout CurioCities: Futures Unlocked*, you will become aware of what YOU consider important about the societal challenge on circular society.
- The exact challenge that you will be working on will be announced on the first day of the city trip. We wouldn't want to spoil the surprise!
- By participating in the activities, and through fun suitcase challenges, you will get to understand the perspectives of those involved a little bit better.
- And while you come up with new ways of thinking and knowing, you make futures tangible. Potential futures to draw lessons from, that we can apply today. Futures Unlocked!
For more information about the Responsible Futuring approach, go to the Futures Unlocked* page.
This answers my question.Thank you for your feedback - How many people will participate during CurioCities?
This year, CurioCities offers 57 spots.
This answers my question.Thank you for your feedback - Do I need to participate in social activities?

This answers my question.Thank you for your feedback - Why are we only in Enschede this year, and not visiting other places in Twente?
In the Netherlands, we have provinces, regions and cities. Enschede is the largest city of the Twente region. Of course: Twente has a lot to offer. But this year, Enschede celebrates its 700-year anniversary! Visiting Enschede this year is the perfect way to discover the past, present and future of Twente, to meet the people who live/study/work here and to experience what they do to make a difference!
Visit the Enschede700 website.
Enschede is a lively student city.
Over 30,000 students study at the University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, ArtEZ Conservatoire or AKI. With this number of students and a wide range of clubs and bars, Enschede has earned the right to call itself a vibrant student city. And an international city! Thanks to the University of Twente's international profile and its location close to the German border, the campus - with more than 100 nationalities - is a multicultural community. The University of Twente invariably ends up in the top lists of institutions with the most foreign students.
More information: Student city of Enschede

The costs of living in the Netherlands depends on the lifestyle and where you live.
- If you would like to save money on accommodation, we advise you to book an AirBNB.
- One of the best ways to get around the Netherlands is by train. You can buy a ticket using a machine at the station. A cheaper option is to plan your journey and buy an e-ticket in advance on the website Nederlandse Spoorwegen.
- Every city centre in the Netherlands has a wide variety of shops that speaks to every budget. Same applies to grocery stores and restaurants.
