Sounds Like Juggling A juggling concert by Guido van Hout and Arthur Wagenaar

Composer Arthur Wagenaar and juggler Guido van Hout combine forces to let juggling and music melt into something totally new. In Sounds Like Juggling, self-built instruments are played through the art of juggling - special props that turn juggling into sound. Flying shakers, buzzing clubs, rolling speakers - juggling you’ve never heard before, and music you’ve never seen!
A totally new genre is born: juggling concerts. Unique in the Netherlands.

Everything has to be done differently, especially these days, and this is what the juggling concert is about - breaking patterns, and looking at things in new ways”, says Arthur Wagenaar.

There are four performers, all of whom are both juggler and musician: alongside van Hout and Wagenaar are Aleš Hrdlička (winner BNG Bank Circusprijs 2020) and Clara de Mik (Slagerij van Kampen). Direction is in the hands of Joeri Vos (Veenfabriek, also co-producer).

The première of Sounds Like Juggling took place Friday 25 September 2020 in Korzo Theater in the Hague (festival Cirquemania). This year a tour through the Netherlands will follow in Utrecht (Gaudeamus Muziekweek), Rotterdam (Maaspodium), Leiden (Ins Blau), Den Bosch (Boulevard festival) and Enschede.

Patterns everywhere

The juggling concert Sounds Like Juggling is rhythmical, enchanting and surprising. It makes you look at patterns in a new way - in music, in juggling, in life. There is a power and the beauty of patterns, being stuck in them, and then discovering the art of letting them go.  An art, now more important than ever. Sounds Like Juggling is a fantastic playground of movement and sound, where everything buzzes, crackles, ticks, clashes, falls and flies. Where the rules of the game could change any moment and nothing is impossible.

Sounds Like Juggling: melting pot of music and juggling
Composer Arthur Wagenaar (Susies Haarlok) integrates all possible genres and loves to use self-built musical instruments. In past projects, he put a rebuilt piano and twelve overhead projectors in a shed (Stads/Einder), and transformed the smartphone into a musical instrument with a dangerous will of its own (Close Call). In his third production he turns juggling into music.

Juggler Guido van Hout (Villa Verdraaid, Gandini’s) is noted for performances such as Dry Drops and Out of the Box in which he fuses juggling with music, dynamic visual art and physical theatre. Besides performing, he coaches groups in a process of change in regards to keeping several balls in the air and the art of letting go.

Arthur Wagenaar and Guido van Hout previously collaborated in Verloren Licht and Villa Verdraaid.
