Martin Ruivenkamp (1980) holds a M.A. in Social Psychology and a BA degree in Sociology. His M.A. thesis dealt with an analysis of an interrelationship between the self-construal – activated or chronic – and values emphasized in commercials and its’ effect on individuals’ brand preferences (cf. Baaren & Ruivenkamp, 2007). Ruivenkamp is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Twente, School of Management and Governance, at the STePS department.

Research abstract

Nanotechnology is an emerging technology. Its development goes hand in hand with the production, use, and circulation of different types of images which illustrate the various expectations and assumed (future) applications of that technology. This research in which these imaging dynamics and imaging strategies are studied, is part of the Constructive Technology Assessment Programme of NanoNed; a research programme which aims to understand and improve the interaction between science, technology and society in order to co-construct nanotechnology reflexively and transparently in the Netherlands.

Many different images are produced, circulated, taken up and reproduced in the field of nanotechnology. Different images from visualizations of the nanoscale, artists’ impressions of the nanoworld, to depictions of future visions are all linked to nanotechnological developments. An image is not given, i.e. that an image is what it is. It is important to emphasize this because often images are understood as static entities through which nanotechnology is represented. When images are understood in such a way the dynamic character of nanotechnology is enclosed in these static entities. However, nanotechnology is not solely what it is today. Nanotechnology has a history and, it has a future, including potential applications. The development of nanotechnology is a process with its own dynamics (composed of mutual shaping interrelations between technical/scientific and social developments, expectations, ideas and local-specific practices). To be able to understand images as representatives of nanotechnology’s dynamisms, in this study, images are understood as dynamic hybrids of scientific and fictive elements.

Three developments are examined. Firstly, images are a crucial part of the social-technological developments within the domain of nanoscience/technology; to be able to look, study and work at the nanoscale images produced through visualization practices are needed. In the first section these visualization practices are examined.

Secondly, actors create a position for themselves which they may try to reinforce by producing and using images. By positioning themselves through the use of images, that portray expectations or present the nanoscale in specific ways, nanotechnological developments can be steered in specific directions by different groups of actors. How actor-strategies are packaged in images, and what the dynamics are behind the use of such images is studied in the second section.

Thirdly, images circulate through different locations, where, staged in different frames, images can foreground or background different aspects resulting in the communication of different messages. These staging processes are bounded by the locations in which they are presented. A multiplicity of locations through which images circulate (produce, select or) present images according to their specific rationality of practice. In so doing, the storage and presentation of specific images and the choice not to present other images implies that others, looking for images are steered in a specific direction. In the third section, the locations’ rationality of practice, the dynamics behind selection processes through which some images are (and other images are not) circulated, and the transformations images go through are studied.


Martin Ruivenkamp has been teaching assistant (2006 – 2007 and 2007 – 2008) for the course “Geschiedenis van Civiele Techniek in Nederland” (translation: History of Civil Technologies in the Netherlands) as part of the Bachelor degree “Civiele Techniek” (translation Civil Technologies).
