Methods of policy deliberation

Course description

Provide a comprehensive overview of methods of policy analysis in a deliberative context.

Provide in depth knowledge of and basic hands-on experience with some methods of policy analysis.

After successful completion of this course the student is able to:

Analysis of stakeholders, actors and networks;

Argumentative analysis of policy documents and belief systems;

Structuring and analysis of interactive policy processes;

In this course policy analysis will be considered as 'a process of multidisciplinary inquiry designed to create, critically assess, and communicate information that is useful in understanding and improving policies' (Dunn, 2004). This notion will be critically examined by discussing this book, which provides a comprehensive overview of methods from a contemporary yet balanced perspective of policy analysis. For students with limited knowledge of policy science the book also provides basic knowledge of the history and recent developments in the field.

Subsequently students will get an extensive introduction in several methods of policy analysis, both by discussing methods and by using them in small scale assignments.
