UT Stress in Action: Cognitive Stress Responses and Tappigraphy

Organisation

Stress in Action RT2 (PhT)

Location Enschede, the Netherlands

Period of internship November 2025 to February 2026

Description of Assignment

The stress in action project is a 10-year research project on how to better measure stress in daily life. Most of the time stress is measured in laboratory conditions, but that doesn’t seem to have good predictive validity for which people actually will face health conditions due to (chronic) stress. Therefore, we need to measure stress in the daily hustle of people’s lives. To get a first idea about the project you should look at the website: https://stress-in-action.nl/. For your internship you can contribute to the first phase of this large research project where we are selecting, testing and validating all kinds of stress tools. Stress is multidimensional and is related to how you feel, what you think, what you do and how your body reacts. For all those aspects we need good questions, technologies and other measurement instruments.

This internship will specifically focus on cognitive stress responses. Cognition can be assessed directly with cognitive tasks (e.g. Visual Spatial Working Memory Task) or indirectly through passive phone sensors (e.g. tappigraphy: how people touch and interact with their phone screens).

Your activities may include:

  • Conducting literature reviews on tappigraphy and cognition.
  • Diving into cognitive task performance and tappigraphy data collected over a two-week period (in Python or R).
  • Supporting the design and setup of a new study linking cognitive task performance, tappigraphy, and stress.
  • Contributing to other emerging tasks as the project develops.
