Designing tailored public health communication for a priority target group

Organisation: GGD Twente (SamenTwente)

Location: GGD- Twentehuis Enschede, Nijverheidstraat 30, 7511 JM Enschede

Period: April - June (or combined with thesis)

Brief description of the assignment

GGD Twente is the municipal health service for the Twente region in the Netherlands. Its primary mission is to improve the public health of all residents in Twente. The Infection Control Department plays a crucial role in this mission by focusing on the management of notifiable diseases and other infections that can easily lead to outbreaks, such as norovirus and scabies.

Within the Infection Control Department, the prevention team (consisting of nurses, medical doctors and infection prevention experts) is responsible for health education and prevention. These activities are only effective when people understand the information, trust the messenger, and feel motivated to act on the recommendations.

Because different populations have different beliefs, levels of health literacy, barriers, and motivations, a one‑size‑fits‑all approach to public health communication is often insufficient. To make prevention efforts more equitable and impactful, the prevention team aims to identify specific target groups and tailor public health messages to their needs, ultimately influencing health behaviour more effectively.

The final assignment is to be discussed, but can consist of:

-          Analyse differences withing population groups based on literature
-          Identify a target group with specific needs related to public health communication
-          Apply behavioural (COM-B) and communication theories to develop tailored messaging
-          Create an evidence based communication product
-          Advise the prevention team on implementation strategies

Due to the nature of the tasks, this assignment is for Dutch speaking students only.
