Ben Jongbloed, Hans Vossensteyn, Frans van Vught and Don F. Westerheijden published the chapter “Transparency Tools for Higher Education” in the Research Handbook on Quality, Performance and Accountability in Higher Education, edited by Ellen Hazelkorn, Hamish Coates and Alexander C. McCormick. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar Publishing Limited, pp. 560-574. In this chapter, the authors explain the development towards and consequences of various transparency tools in higher education, such as quality assurance and accreditation, rankings and performance agreements.
