Teuntje Elfrink

Our seventeenth alumni presented in this series of Alumni of Psychology is Teuntje Elfrink. She graduated from the master Mental Health Promotion (now Psychology, Health & Technology). She works as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Twente.

How long did it take to find your first job?

During my study I was a student assistant at the department of PHT. After my internship with Tactus (addiction care), I got the opportunity to stay both at Tactus and the UT. So I was very lucky that I didn’t have to look for a job after my graduation.

What are your tasks and responsibilities?

Currently, after working with Tactus and Saxion, I'm back at the department of Psychology, Health & Technology as a researcher and lecturer.

What have you taken along from your study of which you now profit from?

What I really liked in the both the bachelor and master’s programme at the UT, was the connection with (care) practice and of course the focus on positive psychology next to the ''classical'' psychology. For me, the latter was a real pro in my education.

What do you hope to achieve in your career?

I hope to get my PhD and perhaps, in the far future, follow a postmaster.

If you think about you study time, which memory comes up first?

Looking back at my years as a psychology student, I can only say: give yourself the time to enjoy! (I know, sometimes enjoying isn't quite the first word that comes to mind when dealing with deadlines, team work etc...)

Which tips and tricks would you like to give to current students?

Try to choose a subject of interest whenever you can (e.g. for your theses). What do you really like? What is a question you want to answer? You can influence the path to your degree and are in charge of developing yourself :)

Teuntje graduated writing a masterthesis’. She did a narrative study in which she examines the meaning of growth from the perspective of participants in a life-review intervention. In addition,it is checked whether there is a relationship between the narrative growth as seen in the stories and  the quantitative growth.
