Research at STəPS

Our research programme focuses on the dynamics and governance of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI). The study of the nature and actual dynamics of the processes of STI is considered as a goal in itself, but is also an important prerequisite to investigate the governance of STI.

The view that STI should be considered as social processes underlies the design of our research programme. The programme aims to cover the whole spectrum of the ‘life trajectory’ of techno-scientific developments, ranging from historical to forecast and policy studies.

Research at STePS consists of three themes that are closely interrelated. A graph shows there has been quite a lot of fruitful project collaboration between and across these three main themes.

Technology Dynamics and Assessment focuses on the dynamics of technological development and the assessment of related socio-technical change.

Science and Innovation Policies addresses problems and specific issues concerning the governance of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).

History of Science, Technology and Society takes up specific issues related to scientific and technological change and shows our interest in longer-term developments and transformations.
