geo-information science and Earth Observation

Geo-informatie, kortweg geo, is informatie met een ruimtelijke component. Geo-informatie is met andere woorden altijd gekoppeld aan een locatie, een plek op aarde.

Stel je voor dat je drones inzet om rampen te beoordelen en om gegevens te verzamelen die direct kunnen worden gebruikt om actie te ondernemen. Zelfrijdende auto's helpen te gaan waar ze moeten gaan. Of neem augmented reality naar een niveau waar het echt zou kunnen helpen bij het oplossen van problemen in de echte wereld. Dit zijn slechts enkele van de vele toepassingen die mogelijk zijn gemaakt door geo-informatiewetenschappen en aardobservatie (GEO).


De 2-jarige masteropleiding Geo-information Science and Earth Observation is een Engelstalige opleiding die start in september. Elk jaar komen 120 studenten uit meer dan 30 landen voor deze internationale masteropleiding naar Enschede. Op onze Engelse website lees je meer over de opbouw van de opleiding en de toelatingseisen. Snel groeiende industrie

Geo-informatie is een snel groeiende industrie wereldwijd. Geografische informatiesystemen (GIS) en remote sensing (RS) instrumenten kunnen worden gebruikt voor het oplossen van wereldproblemen en complexe vraagstukken met betrekking tot de gezondheidszorg, voedselzekerheid, klimaat, water, stedelijke planning, veiligheid en land schaarste. De toepassingen zijn talrijk en divers.

GIS en RS werden traditioneel gebruikt door overheden, ministeries, onderzoeksinstituten, provincies en gemeenten. Maar tegenwoordig maken alle organisaties waar ruimtelijke informatie een belangrijke rol speelt - van openbare diensten en telecommunicatiebedrijven tot aan waterschappen en retailers er gebruik van. Er is behoefte aan geschoold personeel met de nodige deskundigheid om de informatie en de mogelijkheden van deze nieuwe technologieën effectief te beheren.
