IGS University of Twente

Welcome

Welcome to the Centre for Risk Management, Safety and Security

The Centre for Risk Management, Safety and Security combines education and research on risk management, safety and security at the University of Twente. It offers a portal for questions, requests, knowledge exchange and assignments from all sectors in society. It initiates research on risk management, safety and security and disseminates the findings. The Centre also provides the opportunity for education and training.

The Centre welcomes widespread collaboration and strives to forge alliances with businesses, governmental and knowledge-based organizations and social institutions in the field of risk management and safety.

The Centre for Risk Management, Safety and Security is an initiative of Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven, who holds the chair of Risk Management at the University of Twente.

Expertise in safety and security

The University of Twente enjoys a worldwide reputation for its expertise in health, sustainability, water, and technologies such as ICT, biomedical and nanotechnology.

With risk management, safety and security closely linked to all of these domains, excellent researchers at the UT are working on simulation models for infections, risk management and innovation in the construction business, energy and climate, and natural disasters. Other foci are face and speech recognition, biometrics and the risks of nanotechnology. At the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation, for example, methods are being explored that can contribute to spatial development and urban planning in areas vulnerable to earthquakes or flooding. Other UT researchers are collaborating with the police, the judiciary and the Ministry of Defence on behavioural aspects of safety and security, such as how to approach suspects, witnesses and informers as well as studying group dynamics and ethics during operations. New technology is an important perspective here.

Developing expertise in the field of safety and security is not an activity we undertake alone. Collaboration is an important feature of the Centre, not only with external partners but also – and in line with the UT’s focus on integrating technology and behavioural and social sciences - with our colleagues here at the university.

The third international edition of the Unmanned Cargo Aircraft Conference will bring specialists from all over the world together to assess the potential of UCA and discuss these questions. Professionals in logistics, aircraft manufacturers, regulators, system developers and airlines will be present at the conference, full of opportunities to network, share knowledge and create new partnerships.
