The title of his abstract is: Interrelations between ionization, structure and biomolecular interactions of soft polymer films: insights from microslit electrokinetic experiments and spectroscopic techniques.
Abstract: The contact of polymeric materials with aqueous environments very often involves the formation of bulk and interfacial charges. In turn, the structure and biomolecular interactions of the materials and their interfaces are largely governed by electrostatic interactions that depend on the degree of ionization of functional groups and ion-specific interactions within the molecular architecture of the material. Advanced electrokinetic techniques and theories have been developed during the last years to facilitate the analysis of the complex interplay between processes underlying material charge formation, ion interactions with material ionized groups and interactions of the resulting material structure with (bio)molecules from the aqueous phase. We provide an overview of the state of the art experimental techniques and theory to derive the charge and structure of soft planar polymeric systems. To illustrate the options arising from these developments, we discuss strategies and recent results for stimuli-responsive polymer coatings, polyelectrolyte multilayers, biohybrid hydrogels and supported bilayer lipid membranes. Finally, we provide an outlook on potential future developments and challenges in this field.
