General information

Martijn Visscher was born in Apeldoorn (1983) and obtained his BSc degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Twente in 2005. At the same university, he received his MSc degree in 2008 with a study on the cortical processing of electrocutaneous stimuli, using EEG and source localization algorithms. In the same year, he started with a PhD program in the Neuro-Imaging group (at that time Low Temperatures group) at the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Technical Medicine, focussing on clinical detection of magnetic nanoparticles in tissue samples. This research was performed in close collaboration with Medisch Spectrum Twente and the Technical Medicine Department as well as various research chairs in the MIRA and MESA+ institutes at the University of Twente. In the meantime, he contributed to several granted research proposals and practical courses for the educational program of Biomedical Engineering and Technical Medicine. He obtained his PhD in 2014.

Research interests

The main research interest of Martijn is magnetic detection of magnetic nanoparticles for clinical applications. During his PhD a patented detection technique, called DiffMag, was developed for specific detection of magnetic nanoparticles in the human body or smaller tissue samples. The development of a smart and clinically useful system for (surgical) interventions is the main goal of his present research. The development of the detection technology is accompanied by investigating magnetic tracers for optimal technical and clinical performance. Other fields of interest include the application of magnetic nanoparticles for imaging and (targeted) diagnostic and therapeutic applications
