Niek finished his study biomedical technology at the University of Twente in 2009. He did his bachelor assignment at the Biophysical Engineering Group (BPE) where he studied the possibilities signal enhancement and for automated curve fitting for Non-resonant Raman spectroscopy . Afterwards he continued on at the UT with the master Biomedical Engineering, following the track Molecular, Cellular & Tissue Engineering. He did an internship at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular physiology in Dortmund, where he studied the application of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy on intracellular proteins. In the beginning of 2012 he finished his Master thesis in the Nanobiophysics group, where he characterized α-synuclein oligomers by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy.
In February 2012 he joined the Nanobiophysics group (NBP) where he is currently doing research on the interaction of α-synuclein with other intracellular proteins.
