Bart studied Biomedical laboratory research at the Saxion Hogeschool Enschede. His bachelor assignment included the validation of CE fluidic microchip for the analysis of electrolytes in blood samples.

After his graduation he started the master Biomedical Engineering at the University of Twente. His master project was performed in a collaboration between the Tissue Regeneration and the Transducers Science and Technology group, where he enabled the entrapment of single cells in microfabricated cages.

In March 2012 he started his PhD degree at the University of Twente, Enschede, on the MESOTAS project within Luttgeā€™s ERC Starting-grant. His research includes the development of a biomimetic 3D-neuronal cell-culture model in combination with microelectrode array (MEA) technology.
