Oil industry consumes a huge amount of fresh water for injection, consequently, generates a massive amounts of wastewater, called produced water, as by-product that is heavily contaminated with immiscible oil, dissolved or soluble organic material, salts, metals and other toxic organic components.
As a result, the produced water must be treated to meet the relevant international water quality standards applicable for the intended end use. Although the treatment of produced water is expensive because of the high oil content, soluble organic components and other various contaminants, it is apparent that making use of these large amounts of water is both cost effective and preserving to the environment. As a result the treated produced water could have the potential to be a valuable product rather than a waste.
After determine the quantity and quality of the produced water we will focus on removing soluble organic pollutants from the produced water to enable it to use for beneficial sectors, such as irrigation, livestock watering and habitat restoration, greater attention turns toward processes that have even greater capability.
Adsorption technology is efficient and cheap technology for removing oil and soluble organics from produced water. I am going to use the activated carbon nanofibers (ACNF) to adsorb the emulsified oil and soluble organics from produced water. In addition, capacitive deionization technology will be used to modify the selectivity of ACNF to adsorb the different types of pollutant in the oilfields wastewater.
