The bachelor assignment is an individual assignment that forms the final part of the bachelor program. It offers the students the opportunity to show their knowledge and skills. The level of the assignment matches the learning objectives of the bachelor program and the curriculum.

The main goal is to learn how to execute a research assignment on the basis of a research question and following a suitable methodology, all under supervision. It is the first time that the individual student is confronted with a more substantial research problem where the results have to be written down in a report and presented orally to an audience. Apart from the scientific aspects the student should also develop a time-effective and critical attitude towards the planning en execution of the assignment. The final grade is therefore determined both by scientific skills and academic skills, like communication, cooperation, attitude, etc.

The assignment has a duration of 10 week full-time (8 hours per day) and is normally executed in one of the research groups at the University of Twente. The assignment is executed under the supervision of a scientific staff member of the research group and under the responsibility of a bachelor assignment committee. The committee decides on the final grade.

The subject of the bachelor assignment and the composition of the committee has to be approved by the examination board.

Because the bachelor assignment can be done in a wide variety of research groups, details of the requirements and execution of the assignment will depend on the research group where the assignement takes place. However, generally the assignment starts with a literature survey, from which a research plan is formulated. An intermediate report can be part of the assignment.

The subject of the assignment is limited in size and complexity, and usually comes from a larger scientific research program. The assignment is concluded with a report and presentation.
