General information

I studied Medicine at the VU University in Amsterdam and obtained my Master’s degree in 2012. During my studies, my interest in neurology increased exceedingly. After graduating, I worked as a junior doctor at the department of Neurology of the Medisch Centrum Alkmaar. Besides a Master’s degree in Medicine, I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Physics at the University of Amsterdam. My interest in research at the interface of both disciplines attracted me to the University of Twente. In 2014, I started my PhD project at the Clinical Neurophysiology group.

Research interests

My research focuses on comatose patients with postanoxic encephalopathy after a cardiac arrest. By means of continuous EEG monitoring, we detect early signs of ischemic damage and electrographic seizure activity. Some EEG patterns clearly predict either a good or poor outcome. However, the clinical significance of electrographic status epilepticus is controversial. In a multicenter clinical trial, we investigate the value of anticonvulsive treatment on functional outcome in patients with this condition. Furthermore, we aim to unravel the pathophysiological meaning and prognostic value of electrographic seizure patterns.

Teaching responsibilities

Neuraal systeem course for Bachelor’s students of Technical Medicine. Within this course, I teach classes on EEG, EMG, and neurological examination.
