General information

Shaun Lodder was born in Kimberley South Africa in 1984. After graduating from high school in 2002, he spent a year abroad in the United Kingdom. Thereafter he returned to South Africa to obtain his formal qualifications at the University of Stellenbosch.

Research interests

Shaun’s main areas of interest are applied mathematics, software development, computer vision and machine learning. In 2008 and 2010 he obtained both his bachelor’s and Master’s degrees respectfully in engineering. The topic of his master’s thesis was related to brain-computer interfaces, and his continued interest in this field lead him to the Netherlands where he now works on obtaining a PhD.

His current position as a doctoral student in automated EEG analysis is led by prof. Michel J.A.M van Putten. The topic of the research is to design an automated analysis system to interpret certain properties of neuronal activity recorded from scalp EEG. The system will be used as an assistant by neurologists to summarize the most important findings in EEGs, and one of its main aims will be to help with the diagnosis of epilepsy.
