RESEARCH:


Type 1 diabetes is caused by the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells. The current methods are transplantation of pancreatic islets. However patients need to take immunosuppressive medications for their whole life to avoid rejection.

In this project, we want to improve islets transplantation and propose a new islet encapsulation method to overcome the need for immunosuppressive drugs. The goal of this project is to use membrane technology and microfabrication in combination with tissue engineering in order to fabricate a non-degradable, biocompatible implant enabling optimal mass transport maintaining islet function.
