A team from the University of Twente, including team members Prof. Wiendelt Steenbergen, Johan van Hespen, Erwin Hondebrink and Pim van den Berg from the Biomedical Photonic Imaging Group, participated in the finals of the national Academische Jaarprijs. This is a competition for the best translation of scientific research to the general public. They won the Public Prize – based on the number of votes acquired during a month of digital voting – with their plan to interest high school children in science and technology. The plan, called Tumoren kun je horen (‘Tumours make a lot of rumour’), involved creating a set of practicals around photoacoustic imaging and detection of cancer to show how science is a very rewarding subject.

National science quiz

The team came close to receiving more votes than the other teams combined, firmly securing the voting prize: an item in the national science quiz. The question is still a secret, but will be made public together with the other questions prior to the show, being broadcast on the 29th of December. So stay tuned!
