Medical Imaging & Interventions

Medical Imaging and Interventions deals with minimal invasive technology, reconstruction of damaged tissues, medical robotics, computer controlled interventions, biomaterials and advanced imaging and localization techniques.

For the imaging area the physical and chemical aspects that are crucial in the field of molecular imaging are treated focusing on the interactions that determine the properties and prospects of existing an future techniques in magnetic resonance and nuclear imaging. Additionally the optical interactions and imaging methods and the required expertise on imaging reconstruction and visualization is treated in order to transform, analyze and utilize complex image structures in multiple dimensions and originating from various modalities. Together with an additional course on a topic selected by the student these three course are places in a semester where a medical imaging case is presented and treated in a small group of students. Typical subjects treated in this case are on the area of neuro-surgery and interventional-radiology and involve localization of tumor tissue (before and during an intervention) and accurate monitoring of displacements (e.g. brain-shift, respiratory and abdominal movements).

In the second semester the program progresses further towards the intervention and the reconstructive technologies to develop improved procedures and new solutions for patient care. Aspects of medical robotics and navigation technology for accurate and reliable medical interventions involving robotic support are treated as well as all o broad range of reconstructive technologies and biomaterials for tissue and organ repair. In order to allow the students to work safely in the operating theatre and to design safe procedures for future interventions it is crucial to obtain the a formally accepted degree on Radiation Protection. Therefore Radiation Protection Level 3 is an integral part in this second semester of the MII MSc course. Similar as in the first semester the technological course are integrated in the framework of a medical case that is focusing on the development of a new surgical procedure for a (minimal) invasive intervention.
