System innovation and strategic niche management

Course description

The course focuses on understanding fundamental change in systems such as the energy system and the role of technical and organizational innovation therein. The course consists of three elements: 1) general knowledge on the theoretical construct of system innovation; 2) the role of strategic niche management (SNM) in system innovation, and 3) system innovation and strategic niche management in the energy system: historical and future perspectives.

After completing the course the students should be able to:

understand the processes that underlie fundamental change of production and consumption systems, especially with regard to the energy system;

·

understand and apply the theoretical constructs of system innovation and strategic niche management;

·

critically assess the process of developments in renewable energy technology;

·

present the key messages of a socio-technical academic journal article;

·

write an academic paper on socio-technical issues concerning the development of a particular renewable energy technology;

·

present a paper on socio-technical issues of a particular renewable energy technology.

 Grading:

·

Final paper (in pairs) 60%

·

Presentation of academic journal article 10 %

·

Draft version of paper 10%

·

Presentation of draft paper (in pairs) 10 %

·

Presence at courses 10 %

The students are gradually supervised in the process of writing (and presenting) an academic paper. This applies to: the individual presentation of an academic paper, writing a draft paper, presentation of a draft paper, and writing an academic paper (final version).
