Dear PhD,

By means of this newsletter we want to inform you about the following topics:

[Problems with P-NUT email account]
[Theme lunch meeting; PhD ceremony + life after PhD]
[Printing companies market]
[Next borrel at Faculty Club]
[Summary of PNN meeting of 14-09-2007]

[Problems with P-NUT email account]
During a period of at least four weeks, P-NUT could not receive any emails at
p-nut@utwente.nl. Persons who send us an email which did not arrive, did not get an error-message. So, did you send us an (urgent) email in September, please resend it to us to be sure that we get it. We apologize for this inconvenience.

[Theme lunch meeting; PhD ceremony + life after PhD]
On Tuesday October 16, we organize a lunch meeting about the PhD ceremony and what to do after your graduation. We invited ???? ???? (pedel of UT) and Biba Potic from Business Accelerator to give two short presentations after which we can discuss about these subjects. A lunch will be arranged for everyone who registers for this meeting before October 15 by sending an email to
p-nut@utwente.nl.

[Printing companies market]
P-NUT organizes a printing companies market on Thursday November 15. Several printing companies explain about the possibilities concerning the printing process of your dissertation. Before this, however, one of the companies will give a presentation titled
What to think about before printing my dissertation. This presentation will be informative and definitively not commercial. In 2006 we organized such a market for the first time and it appeared to be a great success. It starts at 16.00h, location will be announced later. So, be there.

[Next borrel at Faculty Club]
The next Faculty Club borrel will be at 23
rd of October, at the Faculty Club.

[Summary of PNN meeting of 14-09-2007]
Approximately 5 times a year, P-NUT is attending the PNN meeting.
PNN (PhD Network of the Netherlands) is the representative body of all PhD candidates in the Netherlands, bringing together local PhD associations of all fourteen Dutch universities.

PNNs main objectives are:

·

To ensure the quality of the PhD research carried out at Dutch universities, by representing the interests of PhD candidates at the national level;

·

To survey the working conditions of PhD candidates at Dutch universities and inform PhD candidates about their rights and obligations, as well as about ongoing events that might be of their concern.

·

To keep PhD candidates in the Netherlands up-to date on developments at the national level, via the local representative bodies.

The following subjects were discussed in September’s meeting:

·

Bursalen system (considering PhD candidate as a student and not as an employee, which means less legal rights): PNN is against the bursalen system and therefore they are negotiating with the following organizations:

·

ministry of OC&W, VSNU (organization of all Dutch universities), AbVaKaBo (labor union) and the EU.

·

VSNU is working on career perspective of PhD students, they want to introduce dual PhD programs: this means that a PhD candidate partly works on PhD program and partly works for the government/local authorities or teaching at higher/middle schools. VSNU thinks that this will also be a solution for the problem of too few teachers. VSNU is also in favor of facilitating the “buitenpromovendi”, which means that people working at certain companies will be financed by the company to go into a dual PhD program. VSNU wants to get more PhDs in business. PNN is mainly in favor of the second point. VSNU wants to set up 3 pilots before December for dual promotion, they also wants PhD candidates to get better guidance in their careers

·

Relation graduate and research schools: PNNs opinion is that they should exist next to each other. The graduate school is for the promotion in general and the research school is for specific research issues. In practice they antagonize each other often. PNN will talk about this in their meeting with OC&W

·

The policy plans of 2006/2007 will be evaluated; and PNN is working on a new policy plan for 2008. Issues that will be included in the 2008/2009 policy plan: good PhD supervision, internationalization, PhD performance/yield, person of confidence/trust for PhDs, contract extension for PhDs.

·

PNN is looking for new members who speak/write Dutch; anyone who is interested can look at www.hetpnn.nl

Kind regards,

the P-NUT board
