Smart Grid

The Netherlands has one of the most reliable electricity grids in the world; however, the fast development of several innovative technologies, driven by the goal to improve energy efficiency, could pose threats to the stability of the grid in the future. A frequently mentioned solution to such issues is the so-called ‘Smart Grid’; however, the concept is vaguely defined leading to many misconceptions and disputes about what a Smart Grid really is. Since the current status of the energy industry differs significantly from country to country, it is important to examine the Smart Grid concept in national contexts. Therefore, this research project aims to delineate the interrelationships of the drivers and potential risks that could lead to problems in the grid and provides a conceptualization of what Smart Grid is and how it can alleviate those problems in the case of the Netherlands.
