About the Twente University Fund
The fund was established in 1948 by government councilors and entrepreneurs from Twente to lobby for the establishment of a Technical University in the North-East of the Netherlands. When the Technische Hogeschool Twente was established, the fund was converted into a university fund with starting capital of one and a half million guilders from the business community. Since then, the fund has contributed annually to the growth and prosperity of the TH and later the University of Twente. The fund is dependent on return on assets and fundraising for its financial resources.
The challenge: friendraising & fundraising
Since 2014, the fund has started a transition from mainly fund management to more active fundraising. The annual campaign has been professionalised, resulting in an increase in the number of donations from an average of 250 donations per year in the years up to 2014, to more than 1,100 donations in 2020. A major donor campaign was also started in 2014 that generated more than 10 million euros.
The board's role in fundraising is still limited. The board members have indicated that they want to strengthen their role in the field of 'friendraising & fundraising'. A new board member is expected to have an affinity and preferably also experience with friendraising & fundraising and to want to make an important contribution to this.
Time requirement
Membership of the board means a time commitment of at least 8 days per year. Think of four board meetings (including General Resources Committee), representation of the fund at events, award and grant ceremonies and involvement in the UT ambassador network. Apart from that, a member of the board is expected to profile the fund within his/her network and to commit to 'friend-raising & fundraising'.
The student board member is appointed for a term of two years and can be reappointed once. It is possible and desirable to complete the term of appointment when the student has graduated.
Board membership is an unpaid position. A fee is available for the student member in accordance with UT-Flex.
