Erasmus+ funding update

Please be aware that the Erasmus+ budget for student mobility in Academic Year 2025-2026 has been fully allocated (awarded). This means that no Erasmus+ funding is currently available for new student mobilities, with a planned start beyond 24 April up to and including July 2026.
New Erasmus+ funding for student mobility is expected to become available again from August 2026 onwards, affecting the semester exchange, placements, and BIP participants in Academic Year 2026-2027 with destinations in the EU. You can already indicate your intention to apply for an Erasmus scholarship in Academic Year 2026-2027 by answering the scholarship questions in Mobility Online.

Erasmus⁺ Traineeship Scholarships are available for UT students who will do a traineeship (internship or graduation) abroad at a company, education centre, university, research centre, or other organisation in one of the participating countries. The value of your Erasmus⁺ Scholarship depends on your destination, with a monthly allowance varying between € 480 and € 540 in the academic year 2025-2026 (see Erasmus Scholarship Amounts).

Eligibility Conditions

In the texts below, ‘traineeship’ refers to a period abroad undertaken either as an internship or to carry out (part of) a thesis project.

The country of destination must be considered safe by the Dutch Government (Dutch only).
At the time of your scholarship application and for the entire duration of your traineeship, you are enrolled as a full-time student at UT.
If your traineeship is undertaken during your bachelor's studies, you need to have obtained at least 60 ECTS credits at the start of your traineeship.
Your traineeship must be part of your UT degree programme.
Your traineeship must take place in one of the participating countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, North Macedonia, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey.
The country of destination is not your country of nationality.
During your entire stay abroad, you must both live and work in the host country.
If your mobility is undertaken as part of a joint or double degree programme, your host organisation must not be the partner institution participating in that joint or double degree programme.
Your host organisation is not a European institution (e.g. the European Commission) or an organisation managing EU programmes (e.g. national agencies); these organisations are excluded to avoid conflicts of interest or double funding.
The traineeship must have a minimum duration of 2 months (60 days).
The Erasmus+ Traineeship Scholarship provides funding for a maximum of 2 months per study phase (Bachelor’s or Master’s programme).

Application and procedural requirements

You can apply for the Erasmus+ Traineeship Scholarship via Mobility-Online after your traineeship has been approved by your educational programme.
Eligibility is based on completion of the full application process (before, during, and after the mobility period).
You must complete your application at least 4 weeks before departure (preferably earlier), due to the required administrative procedures.
All required documents must be signed by all parties at least 2 weeks before the start of the traineeship (not after arrival at the host organisation).
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered eligible for a scholarship.
All required steps must be completed as outlined in the application procedure. The University of Twente reserves the right to cancel your application if any steps remain incomplete. In such cases, any advance payments must be reimbursed.

UNITED KINGDOM

Since Brexit, the UK is no longer taking part in the Erasmus+ programme 2021-2027 for individual mobilities within the EU. UT will automatically offer these students a Twente Mobility Fund Scholarship or a Holland Scholarship (depending on availability) instead.

SWITZERLAND

Students who go to Switzerland on an exchange can not qualify for an Erasmus⁺ grant because Switzerland is not one of the program countries. Switzerland has the "Swiss - European Mobility Program", which is financed with a Swiss subsidy. Students must apply for the scholarship at the Swiss host institution. Erasmus+ Top Ups

The Erasmus+ programme allows for a top-up to the scholarship of a student who:

A. experiences financial barriers to studying abroad due to socio-economic reasons

B. experiences financial barriers to studying abroad due to health reasons or disability

C. uses sustainable means of transport.

If you are applying for an Erasmus+ scholarship, you may qualify for this additional financial support.

Please note: strict criteria and required documents apply to be eligible for each of the above top-ups. Further details about each top-up are provided below.

The assessment of the top-up application is carried out by UT’s Centre for Educational Support and is based on the answers and documentation (evidence) you provide in the Mobility Online application. This should be in accordance with the description under ‘’How to apply” below. The assessment will be done confidentially with respect to your privacy.

Fewer Opportunities

This top-up applies to the following groups:

Socio-economic

People with low incomes, financial difficulties or those dependent on social welfare assistance.

Required documents:

Proof of an awarded supplementary grant (not equal to €0) from DUO. This proof is still valid for the award of the inclusion top-up up to and including two years after the end of the study. It is not important in which year of the study this proof was issued. And/or at least:
Declaration of Honour*

Health reasons

This concerns obstacles resulting from health problems, including in the form of a serious illness, a chronic illness or another physical or mental health condition, which hinder participation in the programme.

Required documents:

A doctor's note or other valid health certificate; and/or at least:
Declaration of Honour*

Disability

This concerns physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various disabilities, may hinder a person's full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.

*If the substantive burden of proof cannot be met, a Declaration of Honour may suffice. In that case, (1) it must be explained why the substantive requirements of proof cannot be met and (2) a Study Advisor or Institutional Erasmus+ Coordinator is authorised to assess and sign the declaration upon approval.

The amount of this top-up is irrespective of your destination in the EU. The top-up is provided at the start of your mobility.

How to apply

In Mobility Online, indicate in your Erasmus+ scholarship application that you wish to apply for this top-up and provide answers to the questions in your application. You will be asked to provide evidence and to sign the Declaration of Honor prior to the start of your mobility. You’ll note in the Grant Agreement that you have applied for this top-up. In the process of the application you are asked to provide evidence prior to the start of your mobility.

Inclusion Support

If you are a recipient of the fewer opportunities top-up for a disability, the UT's Centre for Eductional Support may consider supplementing your scholarship with an extra contribution.

The extra supplement aims to contribute to the extra financial costs made by participants with physical or mental health related conditions. This allows for their participation in the mobility, in preparatory visits and/or for accompanying persons (including costs related to travel and individual support), if justified, and as long as it is not covered through the budget categories "travel support" and "individual support".

Amount

This extra supplement consists of a one-time contribution of €100.

How to apply

You are not able to apply for this top-up in your Erasmus+ scholarship application in Mobility Online. If you experience costs directly related to your mobility experience as stated above, email Study Abroad with evidence of the actual costs made for your mobility.

Green Travel Support

In order to encourage sustainable travel, you can receive Green Travel support if travelling with a sustainable means of transport both to and from your exchange destination.

Eligibility

In Erasmus+, green travel is applicable when the major part of the round trip is done with low-emission transport such as train, bus, carpooling, or bike instead of flying.

In practice, that usually means more than 50% of the total travel distance is covered sustainably, and the student or staff member may get extra funded travel days and, in some cases, a higher travel grant.

Green travel generally applies if:

Student or staff travel to and from the host country mainly by train, bus, carpooling, or another low-emission mode. Electric car = not listed and thus not valid for green travel.
The sustainable part covers more than half of the total journey distance, counting outbound and return trips together.
Student or Staff provide proof, such as tickets or a declaration for carpooling.

How to apply

Indicate in your Erasmus+ scholarship application through Mobility Online that you wish to apply for this top-up and provide answers to the relevant questions in your application. In the Erasmus+ scholarship application process you will be asked to provide evidence of your green travel plans and to sign the Declaration of Honour prior to the start of your mobility. You’ll notice in the Grant Agreement that you have applied for this top-up.

Interrail Pass for Erasmus+

The Interrail Pass for Erasmus+ is a single train pass that grants unlimited travel on participating European train networks for a set number of travel days within a 6 month period. This Pass is ideal for university students and staff who go on an Erasmus+ exchange for a period of up to 6 months. The Pass offers participants the chance to travel affordably and sustainably to their exchange while seeing Europe’s highlights along the way. Application procedure

All applications will take place via your registration in Mobility Online. In order to apply, each mobility must be registered via a registration form. Registration forms can be found via this link (see quicklinks at the bottom of the page). After you have registered the mobility (once), you can login to your Mobility Online environment. The application for a scholarship will automatically appear in your workflow.

You are required to take the following steps of your workflow before departure:

Download the scholarship Learning Agreement and Grant Agreement in Mobility-Online.
Fill in any missing information and gather the required signatures for both documents.
Upload the files in Mobility-Online.

After you have finished the required steps and your scholarship has been granted, you will receive a provisional amount of 75% of the scholarship. (The final amount is calculated at the end of your mobility, based on your true starting and end date, considering any changes that might occur to the dates during your mobility.)

During the mobility

The section ‘During the mobility’ in your workflow within Mobility-Online registers any changes to your mobility programme. You must have any changes to this section approved by your host institution and faculty contact person and signed by all parties or confirmed by email.

Extension of the mobility period

Unfortunately, we cannot offer funding for an extension to your mobility due to limited availability of Erasmus+ funds at UT.

After the mobility

Download the 'after the mobility' section of your Learning Agreement in Mobility-Online.
Gather the required signatures.
Upload the files in Mobility-Online.
Complete the questionnaire (Participants Report) regarding your Erasmus⁺ Mobility that will be sent to you by Erasmus⁺ one day after the end date of your mobility period.
This questionnaire is a mandatory part of your scholarship and must be completed within 30 days after the end date of your mobility. Please make sure you fill in the survey within 30 days upon receipt, or the link to the survey will no longer be valid! (See Grant Agreement art. 7.1.)

After you have finished these final steps, you will receive the remaining amount of your scholarship.
The final amount will be calculated based on the dates of your stay in the 'after the mobility' section of your Learning Agreement / Traineeship Certificate. If your dates have changed after your Grant Agreement was approved, the total amount will be recalculated along with the final payment.

Please be aware that if you fail to meet all of the scholarship requirements mentioned above (before, during and after the mobility), the UT reserves the right to cancel the allocation of the scholarship.

All steps are required based on very strict Erasmus+ guidelines. In case an application remains incomplete after your mobility, the advance amount will have to be paid back in full.
