Title of internship assignment

Gelre ziekenhuis Apeldoorn : Who’s working on what and how? An examination of therapist and patient perspectives on the primary goals in the treatment of medically unexplained symptoms

Gelre ziekenhuis Apeldoorn, Department of medical psychology in collaboration with HPT/UT

Apeldoorn and Enschede

Desired period of internship

April – July 2018

The assignment

You will interview and observe patients and therapists in a multidisciplinary group treatment for patients with medically unexplained symptoms. Specifically, you will investigate the goals which are set during the course of the treatment, in how far there is consensus on the goals themselves, the treatment methods and if and  how they are being achieved.

Treatment goals can vary greatly between patients and can include among others:  achieving a better energy balance, reducing stress and negative emotions, becoming more assertive, increasing confidence, setting boundaries, improving relationships, work and hobby’s. Such goals are set in the first week of treatment in a “gevolgen model” but is the question in how far patients and their therapists actually commit to these goals and tailor their treatments accordingly.

During your internship you will follow the patients using the goals as set in the “gevolgenmodel” as starting point and follow their progress during the treatment through observation and one or more interviews. Additionally you will interview a psychologist and  psychomotor therapist, dramatherapist and/or creative therapist on their perspectives of the goals set and the treatment methods used to reach them.  You can compare the patient perspective with the health professional perspective.

This project is mainly qualitative research and will result in a scientific report of the findings (internship report) and a management report which evaluates the collaboration between patients and therapists, points out strengths and weaknesses and offers proposals how goal collaboration can  be improved during treatment (internship product). This internship is in Dutch. You can follow up this project with a Master theses.
