Description of the assignment:

Evidence-based studies show that doctors’ communication skills have a significant impact on patient care and correlate with improved health outcomes and health care quality. Therefore, medical communication plays an essential role in the educational program of Technical Medicine, an educational program to become a technical physician: a professional who is an expert in the optimization of patient care through technology.
To train and assess these medical communication skills, simulated patients (SPs) are of great value. A simulated patient is a lay person who has been trained to portray a patient with a specific condition in a realistic way.
Despite considerable literature on the use of simulated patients and their value for the learning outcomes of the student, it still remains unclear what the contribution of simulation patients is to meaningful learning of the student during the interaction at a medical consultation.

With this research project we want to develop an understanding of the perception of the simulated patient concerning his or her contribution to the learning process of the student. This research project is part of a PhD project aimed at theory development about the contribution of the simulated patient to meaningful learning of the student during a medical consultation.

During this qualitative study you will conduct and analyze semi-structured interviews with simulated patients to explore their perception on meaningful learning of the student and their contribution to this. An interview guide will be provided
You will summarize the findings and present ideas for further steps in the process of understanding the role of the simulated patient in student learning.

Who are we looking for?
You are an enthusiastic master student, motivated by working in a medical educational setting. This project requires excellent communication and planning skills. You are interested in medical communication and interaction processes in general.
You are motivated to better understand the perception of simulated patients. This requires excellent communication skills and empathy.
You have a strong interest in qualitative methods and are able to conduct qualitative research in a dynamic environment. You are fluent in Dutch, both oral and written.
A job interview is part of the selection procedure.
