SHORT BIO

Jan van der Meij (1970) is Programme Director at ELAN: Institute for Teacher Education and Science Communication. After finishing a teacher training in electronics at Pedagogical Technical Higher Education (PTH) in Zwolle (1990-1994) and graduating with a masters degree in Educational Technology from the University of Twente (1997), he worked at the educational software design department of the national Centre for the Innovation of Education and Training (CINOP) in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (1997-2001). In March 2001 he started his PhD project at this University where he became permanent staff member in August 2006. He defended his PhD thesis titled “Support for learning with multiple representations: Designing simulation-based learning environments” on the 20th of December 2007 (pdf version).

Jan’s research interest lies in teacher and learner use of ICT in the classroom. Currently he is investigating the use of video instruction, iPads/tablets in primary and secondary education and the use of live videoconferencing for remote classes and expert lectures.

Jan is one of the projectleaders of the Innovatie Impuls Onderwijs project Live Videolessons responsible for teacher development and he is supporting the Twents Carmel College schools with the use of iPads in the classroom.

Awards: In 2014 Jan and Hans van der Meij received the Distinguished Article Award for their article “Eight guidelines for the design of instructional videos for software training” in Technical Communication.
In 2009 Jan received the Educational Science and Technology (Onderwijskunde) Teacher of the Year award.

Nomination: In 2011 Jan was nominated for the Educational Science and Technology (Onderwijskunde) Teacher of the Year award.
