Anne M. Dijkstra, PhD (University of Twente) is an assistant professor in Science Communication at the University of Twente, faculty of Behavioural Sciences. She studies the changing relationship between science, technology and society from a communication perspective. Her research focuses on public engagement, science communication, risk communication and risk governance regarding new and emerging technologies such as biotechnology, genomics, human enhancement and nanotechnology.

In 2013 she was a visiting researcher at Newcastle University and a visitor at the Institute of Advanced Study at Durham University. In 2008 she defended her PhD dissertation with the title ‘Of publics and science. How publics engage with biotechnology and genomics’. Prior to her academic work she worked as a project manager & (science & risk) communication advisor.

Currently, she is involved as a researcher in the EU-NUCLEUS project (No 664932 – September 2015-2019) about New Understanding of Communication, Learning and Engagement in Universities and Scientific Institutions. This project aims at analysing and facilitating the dialogue between science and society via the notions of Responsible Research and Innovation.

Since 2014 she coaches and supervises excellent master students in the Research Honours master programme at the University of Twente. In addition she is involved in the Twente Graduate School as a coordinator and lecturer. She designed the track Science Communication of the master programme Science Education and Communication and was coordinator of this track (2008-2015). She has taught various courses related to science communication: Science Communication & New Technologies (197457300, 5 ECTS), Science Journalism (197457200, 5ECTS) and Science Education & Communication (197457000, 5ECTS). She is supervisor for the Graduation Thesis (197457500, 30ECTS) and was chairing the Examination Board of the master programme SEC (2014-2015).

As a volunteer, Anne Dijkstra is involved in organizing public meetings for the Science Café Deventer (www.sciencecafedeventer.nl). Every second Wednesday of the month, an academic speaker presents a lecture and discusses issues raised by an interested public. In addition, she organizes with other volunteers a science-art festival in Deventer, with scientific lectures, music, experiences and other activities all related to the ‘head’. The festival is called the ‘KOP-festival’ and is organised every two years (www.kopfestivaldeventer.nl).

For younger people there is the Children’s Science Café, Zabuki (www.zabuki.nl), also every second Wednesday of the month. Nature published about it: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v475/n7356/full/475296c.html
