Before becoming an academic, Maartje has worked for commercial organizations for six years while obtaining her Bachelor’s degree of Business Administration (2005) in the evening hours. Still in search for a suitable career path, Maartje decided to become a full-time student and graduated from the University of Twente in 2011 with a Master of Science in Communication.
As she had found her passion for scientific research, Maartje stayed at the University of Twente to start a PhD project at the Department of Communication Science. The current dissertation is the result of a three and a half-year undertaking. Maartje’s research interests are people’s use experiences with and social and emotional responses to socially interactive technologies in general, and, specifically, social robots. Currently, Maartje is working as a postdoctoral researcher on the project ‘Human-Robot Relationships and the Good Life’ for which she received a grant from the University of Twente. The project aims to investigate whether and how the relationships some users are willing to establish with social robots can contribute to the psychological well-being of those users.
I am interested in the long-term domestic use of assistive and socially interactive technology and systems that range from mobile devices to screen agents and embodied robots. My research focuses on user acceptance, human-technology interactions, and relationship-building with these technologies. In the long end, the goal is to provide insight to designers to improve the sociability of these products from a user perspective and thereby increasing the acceptance of these products into the users’ daily lives.
