One of the first two alumni presented in this series of Alumni of Psychology is Martine Bos. Martine graduated from the master Mental Health Promotion (now Positive Psychology & Technology) in 2013. She works as a Psychologist in training to Mental Health Psychologist (GZ-Pscholoog) at PsyQ Mental Health Institution with a people with a diversity of psychiatric disorders.
How long did it take to find your first job?
During my master I was doing my internship at Mediant GGZ, at the clinic for schema therapy for personality disorders. At that time it was hard to find a job in my area, so after my graduation I stayed there for a while as a volunteer to help with research and group treatments. This gave me the chance to apply to my first job as a psychologist there, at the department for eating disorders.
What are your tasks and responsibilities?
At the moment I’m working at PsyQ, a big mental health institute with a small department in Enschede. I work here for 3 years now. I really like the diversity of my current job. I’m working with adults and doing all kinds of treatments, individual and in groups (for example mood disorders, anxiety disorders, autism, ADHD, personality disorders) and also a lot of psychodiagnostic examination. Recently I started with the course to become a GZ-psychologist, which gives me great opportunities for the future.
What do you hope to achieve in your career?
I hope to develop my skills and knowledge as a psychologist further, so that I can improve myself more and more. I’m looking forward to gain more skills and experience regarding personality disorders and schema therapy, because this is something I’m really passionate about.
If you think about your study time, which memories comes to mind?
When I think back of my time as a student, I was mostly interested in the courses about psychopathology and therapy skills. I remember the endless struggles with statistics with my class mates and also the fun we had together. My group of friends from university are still my best friends and I’m so happy I got to know them, I would never want to have missed that time together. I think my time as a student was a basis for all the working experiences that were about to come.
Which tips and tricks would you like to give to current students?
When you’re working in your area and with people, you will gain a lot of experiences and skills. I’m learning a lot from practicing new things, asking colleagues, following courses. Don’t be afraid to fail and use all the opportunities that are coming your way to improve yourself. In my opinion, the working field is our best teacher.
Martine graduated writing a masterthesis (in Dutch) in which she aimed to identify early maladaptive schemas in individuals suffering from personality disorders. In addition, het study seeked to examine life domains in which patients feel limited and the relation between maladaptive schemas and different life domains was examined. Find it here:
