INTERVIEW WITH ALEXANDER BRINKMAN My research has been on Josephson junctions. A Jospehson junction consists of two superconductors that are weakly coupled, for example by separating the electrodes by a small insulating layer. Electrons can still tunnel through that layer. In my research I used junctions with two of those barriers (thinner than 1 nm) to seperate a thin (5 nm) metal from the superconducting electrodes... INTERVIEW WITH ARNOUT VAN DEN BOS Basically my thesis is about the invention of a new sensor for a Magnetic Force Microscope (MFM).
Such a sensor consists of a small spring, with a magnetic tip at the end. The MFM is, amongst other applications, used to visualize the bits on hard disks. You could think of a bit on a hard disk as a very small magnet...
INTERVIEW WITH BARBARA DORDI Monolayers are molecules that spontaneously organize themselves on a substrate. The aim of the thesis was to study the reactivity. Molecules react in a different way; depending on whether they are in a solution or on a surface. Reactivity in a solution is for instance much quicker than on a surface, which may take hours and sometimes even days... INTERVIEW WITH DOUWE-WIEBE VAN DER MEER I have been investigating the influence of ir-regularities in the carbon chain of polypropylene on the crystallization, morphology and mechanical properties of the material. Therefore I have been looking at samples with different chain structures and the processes that lead to these structures... If they match, that means that the circuit under test is good; if it doesn’t there are some defects or faults... Photonic crystals are structured materials on a nanometer scale with unusual optical qualities. It is built in layers, each layer having its own refractive index which results in the colour effect you see on CD’s or in opals for instance... It is to accelerate two proton beams in opposite directions to an unprecedented energy of 7 TeV...
