The classical approach to wetting is to consider liquids on perfectly rigid substrates. However, in many practically important circumstances the surface is very soft and exhibits strong elastic deformations. Examples of such “Soft Wetting” phenomena are drops spreading on a gel, bending of microstructures, but also roller bearings exposed to heavy loads. This ERC will resolve how such (visco)elastic deformations influence on the statics and dynamics of wetting and lubrication. Key questions are how the contact angles and drop motion are affected by substrate rheology and the interfacial stresses of the solid.
