Manual first time set-up Android device

After you have taken the Android device out of the box for the first time and switched it on, you need to take a few steps to set-up the device. With these steps, you will set up Eduroam (wireless internet), email (Exchange activesync) and the default language.

Due to the fact that every type of Android device requires a different set of steps, we will explain to you in a general way how to set up Eduroam and email.

IMPORTANT: If you have used an Android device in the past, then you can transfer the SD card from one phone to the other in most cases. This ensures that photos, among other things, are immediately available on the new phone.

STEP 1 Device installation:

Switch on the Android device by pressing and holding the power button on the top or side of the device. After seeing the Android logo (or manufacturer logo), you will be see the device's first installation screen. In these first steps, you can set the device's language, among other things.

STEP 2 eduroam WIFI installation:

In one of the first steps, you will be asked to log in to the Wi-Fi. You can use the following settings to connect to eduroam:

Choose 'TTLS' under EAP Method

Choose 'PAP' under PHASE 2 Verification

3.

Enter your s or m number @utwente under Identity (e.g. m1234567@utwente.nl)

4.

Enter the password corresponding to your s or m number under Password.

5.

Press Connect.

STEP 3 UT e-mail installation:

Go through the next steps and make choices or enter information if required. You will then reach the 'Accounts and Synchronization' step. Select the following options and settings:

Select 'Exchange ActiveSync'

2.

Enter your UT email address under Email (e.g. a.b.jansen@utwente.nl)

3.

Enter your UT password under Password (same as the password for the s or m number)

4.

Press 'Manual Settings'

5.

Under Server Address, enter: ‘xs.utwente.nl’

6.

Under Domain, enter: ‘ad’

7.

The other settings are correct by default

8.

Press 'Next'

9.

In the next screen, you can choose what data you want to synchronize in what way (recommendation: Keep all the sources checked and enable 'Push mail'

10.

Press 'Next'

11.

Choose a name that is recognizable to you for this account under Account Name (e.g. Utwente)

12.

Press 'Complete settings'

STEP 4 Complete settings:

Press Next and go through the next steps until you see 'Complete settings' on your screen. The phone is now ready for use.

Importing contacts

On your old Android device:

Make sure Gmail is installed on the Android device

·

Open the applications lists, go to settings and open 'Accounts and Synchronization'

·

Make sure that 'Automatic Synchronization' is enabled

·

Select the 'Google' account and tap your Gmail address

·

Make sure 'Contacts' is checked

·

The 'Contacts’ will now automatically be synchronized between Gmail and telephone and vice versa

On your new Android device:

·

Open the applications lists, go to settings and open 'Accounts and Synchronization'

·

Add the Gmail account that is also installed on your old device

·

Make sure 'Contacts' is checked

·

The 'Contacts will now automatically be synchronized between Gmail and telephone and vice versa
