Make an iTunes back up

Introduction

iPhones or iPads work with the iTunes program. On your PC, iTunes has a local library and database of music and backups of your installed programs. When you wish to perform a reinstallation of your PC, you would like these files to be saved and would like them put back on the newly installed machine. If you don’t do that, restoring these can take more time and time will also be involved in figuring this out. So, if you acquire a new computer or if the old computer has to be reinstalled, you can opt to copy the iTunes library to the new computer. The instructions given below explain how you can do this:

Before you start

·

When working through the instructions, you will frequently need to carry out certain actions. A specific style of writing is used for these instructions: references to text and buttons on screens are printed in italics, data that you have to enter yourself is printed in bold.

·

Make sure that you have a hard disk or USB stick that is large enough for the back-up of the iTunes library. Tip: You can temporarily store the back-up on your iPhone because this can also act as a hard disk

Step 1: Old PC back-up

·

On your old PC, Download the newest version of iTunes. This is so that all iTunes library files are up-to-date before these are moved to the new PC. Download the latest version of iTunes.

·

Go to the folder where the My Music folder is saved. Below are the standard paths, but you may have modified these paths at some point. Please check that!

In Windows XP, it will probably be:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My documents\My Music\

In Windows Vista, it will probably be:

C:\Users\USERNAME\My Documents\Music\
